Rio again
Rio again. I wanted to display the circular highlights in the bokeh, so I metered manually at 1/1000 and f2.8 with ISO 200 and used camera mounted diffused flash in HSS mode to illuminate Rio.

Re: Rio again
This has beautifully rich tones that do Rio real justice. A really nice looking dog. My own instinct however, would be to lose some of the left hand side. It is dead space and it would also serve to eliminate some of the more distracting highlight areas ( not the circular highlights, more the light green areas).

Re: Rio again
I would like to see a catchlight in the eye, I would also lose some of the left hand side. But a bonny looking dog

Re: Rio again
Thanks for the comments. I did try a square crop (which I think would make for a more balanced picture), but I wanted to keep as much of the circular oof highlights in as i could.
I also did paint in a catchlight, but somehow it didn't look quite right.
I have done very little HSS flash before so this was quite new to me, but i am pleased with the result.

Re: Rio again
Good sharp portrait of the dog but as the others have pointed out, the bright green areas on the left are pulling attention away from the subject.

Re: Rio again
Peter - you don't necessarily have to go to a square format, but even going to a 4 x 5 crop ratio would remove some distracting material that does not do anything for your image. Burning the background down would also reduce the distractions without totally eliminating the background effect that you like.
