The Glory Of Macro ~ Finding new beauty: The Crown Jewels

The Glory Of Macro ~ Finding new beauty: The Crown Jewels

If anyone knows the purpose of the Crown Jewels please educate me.

    The Glory Of Macro: The Crown Jewels ~ Sony Alpha a68 ~ Tamron 90mm 272E Macro Lens ~ ISO 100 ~ Shutter Speed Two s. ~ F/14 ~ Exposure Compensation 0.0 ~ Natural Glass

The glory of macro photography is discovering new and beautiful subjects to photograph. I’ve often photographed this succulent. This is the first time for me to see the compound eyes and the crown jewels.

Shot in our garden/temple somewhere in the Philippines

By 'Crown Jewels' I assume you mean the ocelli on the head, which are primitive eyes that occur on many flies, etc. Although not capable of actual sight they appear to be able to detect changes of light such as the shadow of approaching danger.

They are particularly large on that fly but may just look like little bumps on some insects.

That I do. The three jewels on a Cicada 'forehead' would also be ocelli?

That is correct, Brian. Ocellus is the plural and they appear on many, but not all, insects.

If I'm not real careful I could end up getting educated.

That is always a great risk once you get into insect identification, Brian.
