    Light Painted Phlox

I have a lone phlox plant left in my garden and tonight the wind died down enough for me to try the light painting method introduced by Manfred in this thread. Armed with my LED flashlight and a tissue paper as a diffuser, I set up in the garden. The first challenge is to frame the shot in the dark while holding a flashlight in one hand. The second challenge is to focus which I managed to do using live view while aiming the light at the phlox. Finally, I locked the shutter opened, walk over to the flower, turn the light on and painted for approximately 15 seconds, returned to the camera and released the shutter.
From my experience, the distance between the light and the flower has a large impact on the exposure. Too far and you expose an area that is too large and too close greatly reduces the exposure time required and makes it difficult to "paint" evenly. So, it took me close to 30 shots to finally get this one.

Not a masterpiece but at least it shows that the technique is worth perfecting.

As a first attempt, I'd have to say this image is definitely a success. After 30 shots outside yesterday night, you must have been quite chilly when you finished up shooting.

I learned a long time ago that if you are going to be standing outside for any length of time, it is wise to dress warmly. I wore my winter parka and stayed toasty.
