While I like your portrait, I think you might want to crop the shot a bit more tightly. The problem with many shots with a bright background is that the brightest areas in the image tend to grab the viewer's attention and when that is not the main subject, the image is not as strong as it could be.
You can't easily change the background, but I think you should be able to reduce the amount of white by cropping the left hand side a bit more aggressively.

Nice effort, crop is a bit too severe though and the fuzz/fringe along the sleeve is a bit distracting.
