    Baines Baobabs

Baines Baobabs first painted in 1869 by English explorer and artist Thomas Baines. Said to be the same today as when first recorded on canvas. Afternoon light aided by an oncoming storm added great effect and drama to the majestic trees.

Nice composition and lighting on these unusual trees. A well executed image from a technical standpoint.

The tough part of photographing a stand of trees is that they are often surrounded by other trees. You've don a great job of taking care of that on the left hand side of the image. The right hand side is a bit busier than I tend to like it.

I agree, very nice light and well framed composition. I like the colour of the sky in the right side of the frame, it complements the yellows very nicely. Well executed.

Hi Clive, not heard from you in while

    Very nice light and composition.

I've heard that many of these old Baobab's have died (I think Chapman's has gone). Do people know why?

Hi Dave, went off the radar for a while. Correct Chapman's has gone but not quietly by all accounts, hopefully it was old age, quite sad really. These baobabs look strong only the one closest is showing roots caused by erosion. I tried to get the original painting by Baines to compare then and now but google let me down. I notice a lot of elephant damage in some areas and of course human graffiti defacing the tree.
