With that harbour scene, Joe, I was thinking ahead for possibly something to be used in the 2020 history society calendar so it is a record of everything which was occurring there on that date and time. It has to be in 4 x 5 ratio and this scene has cropped out quite a bit from the sides. Otherwise I would probably have done a different crop; probably 5 x 4 ratio. It might take a little crop from the top and left side although that would tend to place the fishing boat a bit too far to the left.

The problem with that Mind the Step notice, Sandy, is that area is quite dark so people fall over the little step because they are trying to read the notice.

Week 44. Still catching with my backlog so these were actually shot a month ago. Scenes around Salcombe Harbour. Some were shot in 4 x 5 ratio because, once again, I was thinking about possible scenes for the 2020 history society calendar.

Water scenes with interesting landscape and activity! They are all good but I like the last one best (Davrik passing Blackstone Rock). The rush of the water past the boat and the massive rock formation - wow!

Just a quick comment regarding the Kingsbridge Ferry... the depth of field seems a bit a shallow so the ferry is beyond it. Does that make the blue rowing boat the subject?

Geoff, my favourites are the first and last photos.

The first one has a wonderful juxtaposition of a modern day working boat against the backdrop of crumbling ruins (of fortifications?).

For the last photo, I agree with Sandy. It's a dynamic combination of another working boat underway but this time against the backdrop of a serious rock wall. Is this somewhat narrow channel part of the entrance into Salcombe harbour?

I deliberately went to that location at low water to get some photos of fishing boats passing close to rocks to use for the local fishermen's association Christmas Cards and that particular angle makes the channel width appear narrower than it really is; although it is fairly narrow at that point.

With the ferry scene I had to work quickly to shoot something with the last ferry of the season visible but in 4 x 5 ratio for the calendar. I realised that zooming in, if I had time to change lenses, wasn't going to work using that ratio so I tried another option and used that blue boat as a foreground object but with the ferry and town in the background.

Here are two more images from the same day where, after seeing the images on my computer, I have had to 'move' boats to crop a little closer than my original shooting composition.

The Anchorage. Which is the name of that distant house and the boats are all anchored.

Week 45 - Swans feeding at South Pool. Another shot with my Fuji X20 camera and another scene which is pushing the capabilities of this little camera to the limit. But, when you only have one camera with you, that is the best one to use!

Week 46 - From the Coast Path. Took a gamble on the weather improving and eventually there were spells of sunshine with passing clouds.

Sometimes you have to shoot quickly without any thinking time or trial shots and sometimes you see an interesting scene and think 'this won't work' but you have a go anyway because occasionally hope overcomes logic. These were all shot relying mostly on hope.

Not many leaves left standing after the recent gales.

Geoff, the hope and editing worked. I enjoyed them all.

In the last photo, the channel markers suggest there's possibly a harbour around the point. Is this the entrance to Salcombe harbour or is that around the next further away point of land?

Hidden from view on the left side are the coves of North Sands and South Sands, which I have photographed on previous occasions. Part of the lower town area is visible and a small shallow creek runs off to the left where more of the town lies. One the right side, the deeper water continues around a hidden headland. Most boats have been moved to this sheltered area hidden behind that point. The town is about three-quarters of a mile from my shooting point.

This alternative wider view will help to show that area.

The series in Week 46 are all well done. This is a beautiful area to live close to and certainly gives lots of opportunities for excellent photos! I certainly think Hope won out! I'm glad you took the chance!

Week 47 - Salcombe Gravestones. We have had some gloomy damp and windy weather recently which has been virtually impossible for outdoor photography so when a brief spell of clear conditions arrived I had a quick look at a job which I have to do for the local history society this winter. 150 years of gravestones require photographing to create an internet data base for genealogy research.

Hi Geoff - The bit of dreary weather goes well with a cemetery scene. I find it interesting that the grave yard is in the foreground and the line of sight goes on to a set of buildings, and then on to the city of living people. So from death to life.....

Week 48 - You're not a bird!

This grey squirrel occasionally visits my bird feeders. At the moment it is just this one so it doesn't pose serious problems; but they can become a nuisance when too many continually raid your feeders.
