The "shadow" is the taper from the cutting edge to the spine of the knife. Thickness varies from about 4mm near the bolster to around 0.5mm toward the tip. The thin black line is the cutting edge, which is what I focused the camera on. This side view of the knife is:

Well captured. I think this image would work better if you removed the handle. If it were mine I would crop down to about the middle of the silver part of the handle, enough to remove the bit of shadow on it. Then it would be pleasing minimalist shot.
