Card reader

Hi all,

Using a cheap CF card reader I have managed to damage a CF card and then my camera (bent pins). Can anyone recommend a quality card reader please?

I am considering a Sandisk Imagemate pro or Lexar LRW400.

If you damaged both the card reader and the camera then I advise you to buy a new CF card.

Forget using a card reader. If you download from the camera you will significantly reduce any chance of damaging pins....

Ditto and card readers have the added potential advantage of USB 3.1 speeds which (generally) you won't achieve just yet with a direct connection to current camera models. My instinct is to stick with readers marketed by the top end card manufacturers e.g. Kingston, Lexar, Sandisk etc.

I had the Lexar USB 3 reader recommended to me years ago. It still runs exceptionally well and I have never had any issues whatsoever with it. I generally use it 2 or 3 times a week, at a minimum.

I've used Lexar's USB 2.0 Multi-Card reader for years with no problems. However, recently I started using a 32gb EyeFi MobiPro SD card in my old Canon 5D (with a CF to SD card adapter), and I must say it works great.

I have it set up so it only sends jpegs to my iPad while taking pictures (onsite review), and then when I get home, I put the camera next to my PC, and only the RAW files automatically start moving over to the hard drive. Plus it's smart - it doesn't send the same thing twice.

This is using their Keenai app. Ricoh recently purchased them and killed their Cloud back-up, but everything else seems to work OK, at least for now...and doing this obviously completely eliminates the possibility of bent pins.

I too use the lexar usb3 card reader. Just sd and cf slots so easy to identify the card required. works flawlessly with win 10.
Very fast.

I'll sing the same song. I use a cheap Hama card reader, never had problems with it.
But I don't think this is Marks problem.

Unless a pen of the reader has broken and is in the cf card it's most unlikely that the card reader has damaged the card. In that case the card damaged the reader, and the camera.

The fact that it reads both CF and SD cards works great for me because I use both types of cards with my combination of Canon 7D2, 6D2 and Sony A6500 cameras...

I also have the older USB 2.0 version which my wife uses. We carry both readers on a trip i case one goes down...

I have noticed that some CF card readers have slots that allow a bit of play when inserting the cards. I would think that it is easier to damage a card or the reader when using a reader that allows that play. The Lexar seems to keep the cards straight in line when they are being inserted.

As far as the price. The Lexar reader is a bit more expensive than other readers but pro rated over several years use, the extra cost is not that hard to swallow...
