I have been "social distancing" since moving west. This will be an interesting year as tourism in our two national parks (Grand Teton & Yellowstone) will be way down. An alternate route from my daughter's place in Montana takes me right through the most scenic areas of YNP. Those areas also have the best fishing.

Today I an headed to the ranch to do some fishing. I always ask the owner if there is anything that he needs help with. He always says no. So I am taking him a bottle of Kentucky Bourbon that was given to me as a gift. He'll like that.

I wish I could say in confidence not much longer, but I unfortunately have little hope in that.

This pandemic could not have come at a worse time.

Sadly and frustratingly, our options for going outside are now severely limited. Yep, bad timing...

We are in lockdown in the UK now. Not enough people have heeded the warnings of politicians; scientific officers; and medical experts to avoid social contact so it has been imposed on us. You cannot leave your home except for a few limited circumstances ( food shopping/excercise/essential work).

The army have been doing dry runs last week and I expect them to be needed to enforce this given the stupidity or a large section of society. I expect the idiotic ones were waiting for some dumb celebrity to endorse it on Twitter before they would take notice.

I find it unbelievable how people have been ignoring the requirement on social distancing, having seen the crowds of people at various locations around the UK last weekend that the UK media reported on. It seems that some people just don’t get how serious and life threatening this situation is.

Here too. It has been particularly younger people, for example, crowding the beaches in Florida during spring break last week.

In the US, the restrictions vary from state to state. Some (e.g., CA and NY) have shelter-in-place regulations. We are one step back from that. Everything is closed, and gatherings are banned, but we are allowed to go outside, with the limitation that we should maintain a 6 ft (2m) distance from others. We've been isolated for about a week, and we have found those outside breaks very helpful, but they are hard to do. Everyone thinks of the same places to go, and that makes it difficult to maintain distance in some locations. Except at off hours, we have given up on a major walking/bicycling path (a "rails to trails" park) that is only two doors away from us because it isn't practical to keep a distance from people going the other direction. On the positive side, most people in my immediate neighborhood are good about this and will walk to the far side to make room when they can.

Of course, this sort of behavior is possible only because the population is not too dense in our immediate neighborhood.

My guess is that this is temporary and that shelter-in-place will come soon.

Just given the math, this is all coming later than it should have. Unfortunately, politicians in most countries outside of Asia have been slow to act, and a lot of citizens have refused to take this seriously. Just compare South Korea to Italy for a glimpse of the consequences of this. South Korea immediately began widespread testing and isolation of carriers. The result is a death rate that is a tiny fraction of that in Italy. In the US, we still can't effectively isolate carriers because we have vastly too few tests. I think nothing as clearly demonstrates the dangerous incompetence of our current government.

As I see it - much of the stupidity results from a feeling of invincibility among younger and mid-age people.

My son-in-law had reservations for a fishing trip in the state of Louisiana so he flew from San Diego California half-way across the nation and spent several days in Louisiana which has become one of the nation's hotspots for COVID-19 infections. I am crossing my fingers that he will be O.K. and we are keeping in contact with him by phone and email but, not in person.

We are pretty much walled up in our compound which is a pretty nice place to hunker down...



We do one trip a week to the supermarket to stock up on perishable food such as salad items and fruit. Luckily there seems to be a sufficient supply of those items. Our local supermarket which is about 7-miles (or about 11 km) from us has special hours for us older folks. They open their doors for seniors at 7:00 AM and don't let the younger folks in until 8:00 AM. No crowds during the senior hour this morning and plenty of fruit and vegetables available. Almost no paper products or cleaning supplies.

We can get many items by ordering online from Walmart and from Amazon. The local Walmart is instituting a system whereby you order grocery items online, pay by credit card and receive the items in a drive by area with minimal person to person contact.

One change in our lifestyle is that I have begun taking vitamin tablets. My diet, previously, included enough fresh fruits, vegetables, and other high vitamin items that supplementary vitamins were not necessary. But there is no certainty that these fresh items will continue to be available. Of course, our six hens are providing us with eggs and we have stocked up on chicken feed

PERSONAL SOCIAL DISTANCING EXPERIENCE: I noticed my mail carrier's truck approaching my mailbox... Not thinking, I went to the box to collect the mail from her. She stopped the truck about ten feet from my box. I then realized and backed off and she placed the mail in my box with no person to person contact...

ABSOLUTE STUPIDITY... A man thought aquarium cleaner with the same name as the anti-viral drug chloroquine would prevent coronavirus. It killed him.

I cannot blame Trump for this because it is a case of terminal stupidity. However this level of stupidity seems rampant among Trump believers/supporters
