    Double Rainbow

Certainly room for improvement, and I must find the time to hone my skills, use my camera... but wow such a beautiful place I live. A rough image with a lot of problems, but still enjoyed the scene. This followed a short hail storm. Unfortunately we need more rain, hail, snow... any of it. Climate change is not pretty.

Turned out well, Sharon. Personally I like the dark-clouds-versus-bright-ground look. Some might feel too much saturation but it seems to work for this particular scene ...

Love this image but, if it were mine, I think I would crop some off the bottom so that the lilac colored plants were nearer the bottom...

Leave your picture as it is, Sharon. It's lovely and we can all nit-pick.

Lovely! Well seen, well captured shot. I like the way the left hand rainbow ends on the red barn (check it out to see if the proverbial crock of gold in inside ).

There is some merit to Richard's suggestion but I wouldn't disagree with Barry either!

Thanks for the kind and helpful comments. I think the grasslands in the foreground offer another layer yet can see merit in cropping too. The one thing missing that might have improved the image is Mt. Ashland, which is behind the clouds

For me the merit would be in lowering the band of detail that is currently dead in the middle vertically, which would also bring out the rainbows a little. Would only crop to below the bottom of the heather, no more than that.

    Super image !
Rainbows do strange things to the light - there is always a marked difference of luminosity inside the arc compared to outside. No doubt someone can explain that, but it is surely the case. The changes of luminosity in this image are exactly what you would expect.

I searched << rainbow light inside (circle OR arc) >> and found:

"The sky inside a primary rainbow is brighter than the sky outside of the bow. This is because each raindrop is a sphere and it scatters light over an entire circular disc in the sky. The radius of the disc depends on the wavelength of light, with red light being scattered over a larger angle than blue light. Over most of the disc, scattered light at all wavelengths overlaps, resulting in white light which brightens the sky. At the edge, the wavelength dependence of the scattering gives rise to the rainbow."

Also explains diminished contrast on the ground similar to veiling flare ...

    That's natural, Nandakumar:

"During such good visibility conditions, the larger but fainter secondary rainbow is often visible, about 10 degrees outside of the primary rainbow, with inverse order of colours."

    FYI ...
