    A good set of photos!
Do you know the identity of the first butterfly?

The first one isn't a Speckled Wood but at the moment I am not certain about the identification. My guess would be for an odd looking extra dark Painted Lady. It doesn't quite look right for a Red Admiral which was my alternative idea.

The reason I asked about this particular butterfly is that it looks incredibly similar to a photograph of a monarch butterfly that my wife took many years ago in Manitoba. The photograph hangs on one of our walls but has faded with the years. With a newly acquired Epson scanner, I recently digitized the slide and will probably post the final result in due course.

According to Wikipedia, there have been rare occurrences of monarch butterflies in the UK. There's a footnote reference to a 1995 invasion but the link in the footnote (71) is defunct.

Monarchs have much more orange, I think.

Terrific macro captures, great focus, details and the frames are full with little distractions.
