    Just Add Smoke

I decided to try something a little different with my bright field glassware work. I pulled out my smoke machine and injected some smoke into my set. As the scene is being back-lit, the smoke casts some fantastic shadows.

This is the secret of shooting with smoke; back-lighting. If you light it from the front, it reflects the light and generally ruins the image by creating lots of hot spots.

I find the cutoff at the bottom, presumably of the reflections, a bit disturbing

As usual, I agree with Manfred regarding the efficacy of back lighting smoke!

I was given a collection of smoke generating pellets of various colors which I hope to use shooting models on a local beach. Since we are on the West Coast, our beaches are back-lit during the Evening Golden Hour.

Additionally since our fire danger is always at such a high level, the beach is the only place when I could safely ignite the pellets.
