Backlit Glassware - Off in a different direction

I decided to not use the gels and go back to playing with food colouring. I also acquired a taller, rectangular glass vase. Here is my first image in this new set that I am happy with. I am staying relatively simple; a wine glass, two glass vases and two glass spheres.

Very nice, reflections well managed - not easy !

At first glance I liked this a lot but the more I looked, the more the distortion at the upper right of the wine glass seemed not quite right.

Getting a Gold Medal in a prestigious international competition was unexpected but much appreciated. I was competing against 4796 entries from 434 photographers that come from 58 different countries. The Toronto Salon is the second oldest salon in the world and the oldest one in the Americas (this was the 129th time it has run). It is considered to be the most important competition in Canada by most photographers.

In this one the use of the blue food colouring and the variations in the depth of colour within that blue intrigues me. It looks as those you have just stirred the contents of that glassware prior to making the image. I wondered how you achieved that effect?

You have figured out my technique. I added the blue food colouring to the water and gave it a quick swirl with a glass stirring rod and then shot a burst of shots over several seconds. My studio lights recycle in less than 1/10 second, so I got a number of shots of the mixing process. I just picked the one that seemed to work best.

I remember visiting that distillery while we were visiting the Isle of Skye for a few days. Enjoy!
