Pelican poses

Okay, okay, I sprang for the Z8. I had long been lusting after the D850, so when the Z8 was heralded as its successor, in a lighter package, how could I not? Plus I have a chemo-related issue with my eyesight, so the auto-focus features were a real selling point.

I was trying out said auto-focus features on the birds this past Sunday morning. Caught some great pelican shots against smoky haze. Should I do something with the background do you think or leave it as is? How does everything else look to you? Any and all C&C welcome.

The first image is good and the second one is superb. The way that the camera left pelican's beak lines up with the camera right's pelican's wing have created a strong and effective diagonal in this image. The colour palette the soft gray backgrounds work together very well.

Hi, Janis. As others mentioned above, I do think the 2nd image is much better than the first. You just nailed it!

Trying to give some ideas as per your request about the background, I would love to see the white pelicans against a blue sky, but assuming the haze condition, maybe there is nothing you could do, even during post processing.

So, just keep it as it is, i.e., 2 great shots to your archives!

Well, as long as there is no "blue" information on your image (due to the haze), Post processing tend to look not natural. Anyway, I played with it a little, just to better convey what I had in mind when I wrote the previous msg. Regards...

First one not bad, second one really excellent, +1 for leaving it alone. As Manfred has said the strong diagonal works really well, it's a great composition. A touch of blue in the background, as above, cheers it up a bit, but that is a matter of taste.
