    Cicada

No macro lens required to get this beast having a snooze on my deck. It is about 5 cm (2 in) long.

Enjoying the very brief portion of its life above ground...

Are you in the area that is getting the double brood this year?

I was living in Maryland a long time ago, maybe 25 years, when they had the last abnormally large brood. It was quite difficult for a short time. When walking, you had to be careful not to step on them, and when driving, you'd often mash ones that fell out of trees.

No, I live in Ottawa Canada. We hear them every summer about this time of the year. They can be quite loud specially on a hot night. Surprisingly, this is the first live one that I have ever seen.
