When I started, adding a background was part of the plan. I liked the white border, irregular as it may be; it reminded me of the white border around photos. Though the dark background offers a better presentation, it also adds its own tone to the image. I could perhaps make the whit border more like a photo border by evening it out.

+1 to what Manfred said about considering a dark background. Also, I think it works better (than the white) to bring out the black spectacle lens in each of the images .
White too contrasty, black too funereal, how about grey with a small white border on each photo to define the edges.
