Burning the midnight oil.

I walked out on to our back verandah on Christmas night to see my little fella working furiously to download all of the apps to his new tablet before bed time...

I really liked the the way light from the device lit his face and the highlights in his hair so I went and grabbed a camera.

I like it very much, IMO it is a bit too centered and cropping from the LHS might help the composition :)

I almost always prefer separation of the subject from the background but in this case that lack of separation is nearly magical. It causes the viewer's eye to be drawn more than ever to the boy's face and his tablet. Exceptionally well done!

As for the crop, my preference would be to keep most if not all of the negative space displayed on the right side of the original but to eliminate most of the negative space on the left side.

I suspect there are several crop options with this scene. Richard's version works, but I think it would also be possible to go just a fraction wider.

I tried every conceivable crop and colour variation with this set but I always came back to the image above as it was the image I saw in my head that made me get the camera in the first place, he seemed isolated in his world yet very content, the square crop and other tighter versions seemed to lose that sense of isolation for me. As Geoff F suggested I would actually like it wider myself, I may extent the canvas and see how that works.

No more detail is available in the screen as I am so far off axis, the viewing angle on these devices is quite narrow. I am not sure I would include it if it were there.

I think you have gone just a fraction too wide in the second edit, Robbie. Getting just the right amount needs some fine adjustment.

The first edit looks good to me; although I think I would slightly tone down the brighter area in the bottom right corner.

I like the edit of Richard and the first one of the second batch. It looks more natural to me with the light hitting his face.

Nicely seen and captured. I agree with prior comments regarding eliminating some of the space from the left side of frame on the first shot. I prefer the first image. IMO it gives more of the sense of the child being completely absorbed and oblivious to the world. Well done.
