The edit to brighten the image works well Phil. I never knew that area of Whitby was called Tate Hill sands. It took a while for me to orientate myself and this viewpoint. The Board Inn helped [emoji6]

The edited version looks better Phil . If you also reduce the highlights in the sky selectively and add some structure to the clouds , you can give some pop to the image :rolleyes:

Hi again Phil :) I'm afraid your last image is very different from your second edit.You lifted the shadows in your second edit and it was a fine image. But the shadows are darker than your original now.

So, your second edit in post #4 is the best so far.

Phil, I agree with Binnur's comment that the second edit is the best. To my eye, your edit in post #8 lost clarity/sharpness/contrast, I'm not sure which.

I like the composition in the photo and think the B&W works well.

This is a pleasing composition, with the foreground interest of the seaweed and log, the boat in the mid-ground, the varied buildings around the scene, the people by the wall, and all topped off by an interesting sky. The following comment is, of course, subjective - it seems to me that the scene and the sky need different, almost opposite treatments of their brightness and contrast, to bring out the features present in the image. However, some other thoughts also come to mind - perhaps the character and atmosphere of Whitby in this image might be better conveyed in colour, or would the photo then become another picture postcard (not that there is anything wrong with that!).

Second image looks great IMO. Also the treatment that Philip gave the image improves it again I think. All in all a wonderful image.

Philip's edit is similar to what I meant and IMO improved the image a bit more :)

Yes, this edit now has a bit of 'life' in the foreground whilst retaining cloud interest.

Sorry I missed this Phil - thank you for posting the original colour image. For me this has the potential to convey the sensory and emotional qualities of the seaside town in good weather better than does the mono version. By applying some selective adjustments to enhance the warmth and brightness of the scene, it seems to come to life, and I can almost smell the seaweed! Just an opinion, of course.
