Popped up doggie?

I took these photographs on a trip to Taiwan last year. I would really appreciate any comments or critiques! I found this doggie at a home-run inn at Kenting!
Personally, i liked how the dog seemed popped up. I wonder if anyone has the same sentiments..

He's a lovely dog, but it might have been better to get in closer and avoid all the stuff in the background. His upright position looks a bit 'detached' and I'm having trouble making out his shape below the neck. Nice dog though.
