A Costly Date (warning: adult spider content)

Well, we've had these spiders building webs in the bushes out front of our house, and I've been keeping an eye on them. They are definitely not the easiest things to photograph as their webs are multi-layered and always in difficult locations. However, last night I saw a pair mating and figured it might make for an interesting series of photos.

So here goes...

They meet over dinner... he spends far too much and takes her to the fanciest place in town.


They dance the night away... though it looks like square dancing, so you can already begin to see they have issues...


Yet she still plays hard to get... and makes him chase her for a while.


Then things get tangled and confusing...


And finally they consummate the arrangement...


And then he pays the final cost... she eats him.

Actually, I didn't manage to get the last shot. Surprisingly the mating continued for quite a while, and I never managed to see the final act. I'll keep an eye on the other webs (technically this set is of two different pairs anyway) to see if I can capture a final shot to complete the story.

Thanks. The main photos were the mating photos, but I figured I'd toss the others in and have a bit of fun with it. I know they're not the highest quality - most of them are in bushes where I have to contort myself to get to them and tripods don't really work either, but I'm happy with what I managed to get.

Hopefully I can manage to get the last photo to complete the set - though I guess there are plenty of male spiders out there hoping I don't...

I think they're only about a quarter to a half of an inch in size too, so... yeah... less than easy.
