We (the botanist and I) think it's Saxifrage. There's a variety called Saxifrage Californica, which grows mostly in California. Did the flowers look like this? http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi/im...0000+0402+0014
Rather interesting shot as 'saxifrage' means 'rock breaker', and it seems to be doing just that in this shot. Although the name probably came about as the plant grows in rock cracks, rather than actually breaking them.
