I have been trying to add some variety to my Basketball game night shots - I think it is interesting that sometimes the great big zoom isn't the only weapon for this job - much as wide angle are not exclusive landscape lenses.


I have posted it here to show you the lofty height of the platform form which I take my birds eye view shots..


and then finally for this weekend - someone has asked me why don't we get some of the photos of the players printed and the kids can collect them...

they have these for footballers here - but with basketball getting 1 player on their own might be the most challenging....
which got me thinking of Rob's 'recipe'

so as they say on the cooking shows.... 'here's 1 I prepared earlier!

You have really developed an expertise here. Not sure that the wide-angle works as well as it could. Maybe just slightly too wide? Interesting to experiment further with this.

The photocard idea is great and that particular one is a beauty.

Were you making the postcard for the player or was this just for fun? If it was for fun looks like you have a new career ahead of you. Nice shots.

Some of my old photography books (special editions about sports) talks about sports photographers using ultra wide angle lenses on their winning shots. They will position themselves as close as the game directors would allow them under the goal or near the baseline and they get pretty amazing and unique shots just like what you did with the first image, Kay. Nice work!

I do agree with Donald about the wide one though, as Jiro said this perspective works best when you are close as can be to the action.
I am right under the basket sitting at the feet of the cheerleaders (the odd pom pom did bop me on the head at times) but the main player is too far away at the free throw line, so I will keep trying this and get one of a jump shot from the near edge of the 3 point line.
I try to a different perspective for each 1/4 of the game.

Nice work Kay. I do think sometimes we get in too close and forget to show our subject in their environment. Good luck with the cards - they look great.

Very good, Kay (the shots, not you). You are very bad, for not getting yourself in the kitchen and fiddling with recipes and baking. Still, your fiddling instead with the Canon 7D is definitely baking the right scones.

I'd say, with my great expertise , that you are off the back burner, and we are now 'cooking with gas' (as we say up here).

I think the wide angle is good, if you can get in close enough. It would make the actions shots very dynamic, I think. How close can you get?

Thankyou Katy & Peter and Rob - you know too much of K in the Kitchen can only end in tears, so safest all round if I stay out.

My vantage point for the wide shots is shown here where I have added Black arrows, I can either tuck in beside the wee cheerleader girls where they stand or on the other side next to the kids who run out & mop the floor if a big sweaty Basketballer falls over.
I chose the former thinking girls with pom poms was a better spot than boys with sweaty mops....until they bopped me on the head with their pom!
As long as the referee can run unimpeded across the baseline I am fine....
I have a meeting tomorrow about how to proceed with the cards idea, so that sounds promising - I'll let you know how I go.
Although I do feel sorry for my poor husband, I can see a printer being possibly the next 'necessary' purchase

and yep for those of you who know Basketball this was a 'foul!' the opponent in white is clearly impeding our man in Red

But a word of caution from old uncle Donald.

This is, as you say, is fantastic stuff. But it's one of those things that would be very tempting to do to all and every image, it has such a dramatic effect. But I think you'll have to be very selective and not turn it into something that becomes very over-used and therefore 'Oh God. Another one'.

And the other point, as illustrated by Mr S above, is that if you were to go commercial, it becomes a case of 'give the people what the people want'. And if they wants lots of movement blur etc, then give 'em lots of movement blur.

But, of course, I was speaking from a much higher aesthetic level with art as my primary concern and not the grubby world of commercialism. ............ Mmmm! That's probably why I still do the job that I do.
