    What the ****, indeed
Perhaps he too has been painting his house and has got sort of 'attached' to the ladder? I think I can make out some specks of Dulux 'Sea-breeze white' paint on his trousers. Apart from that I don't have a ******* clue being the useless ****** that I am. It's all a load of shift-eight!

I know it's bad ******* form to quote oneself, but I rather like that one - 'shift-eight'. I shall use that in future. Instead of telling someone to '**** off', I will just say, 'why don't you shift-eight off you useless ******" Easy!

Isn't it obvious - he is clearly a novice who is trying to take his photography to a higher level.

I just want to know where the Health & Safety Officer was. And who was thinking about the health and well-being of the gear, if that lot had toppled over and got buried in sand?

What the shift-eight is that? (Goes to Google... can't find it...back to CiC to check the spelling... back to Google...ah! smelling salts!!!)

I'm shift-eighting tired now, especially after being up and down my scaffold ladder all day painting.

Have I missed something? Actually I got stuck on post No 13. Where on earth did you get patriotic scaffolding in Wales?...or did they run out of the green, white and red. I am sure you could get some cheap royal wedding bunting for that if you are really intent on annoying the neighbours.

That's the problem with living in the North of England.

It could be American scaffolding. And as I'm a shift-eighting Republican that would fit in nicely...

You're the one who calls it that....I call it smelling salts, myself. (I didn't know if your way was more manly.)

Oh, is it hot there, too? (☜ Please insert little panting gardener's tongue hanging out - phew!)

    I can't figure out what 'shift-eight' stands for/sounds like - no, don't tell me.

I will tell you Shift eight on a keyboard is the '*' symbol, which is used in a string as a substitute for words that those of us who are lexicographically challenged use all the time, but due to the strict rules that prevail here we can't write out in full.

And you might find this interesting. Normally, I can't stand Stephen Fry, but on this occasion he is right on target.

Soooooo, now, I can't confess that I didn't understand it all because I never really try to use those shift eight kind of words?

Do you have French Connection in America? I haven't seen any recently, but they used to do T-shirts in black with just their logo printed on the front - FCUK. I always thought they were a bit tacky myself. I mean, wouldn't it be much preferable to use the proper full Anglo-Saxon word? It's a bit like using ****. If everyone knows what you mean and its usage has the same import as using the real word then why pussy-foot around using shift-eights? I say either use the full word, or refrain from using anything.

I concur. The fake tongue in cheek humor that is just south of offensive for the sake of being offensive with the paper thin excuse that it isn't technically the offensive thing you're thinking of is getting old. In fact, what should be offensive about that kind of stuff is the insult to your intelligence that is implied by them thinking you won't be able to work out what they really were trying to say.

No, I didn't know about the t-shirts but I love the look on the model's (man's) face in the very first pic.

For bad babies, we have Abercrombie and Finch. mmmm, I'm not so sure why they're bad, though - it's just rumours that I've heard.

I've often wished that I was just a foot taller when taking photos. I wonder if I could, at least, fit a step stool in my camera bag. (See, we're still on topic!)

Yes but it is a an essential item in the middle-class thirty somethings wardrobe. What else would they wear when unloading their BMWs top box at Centre Parks. It gives them that feeling of rebelliousness after tramping round the office in an M&S suit all week. Much better if they tramped round the office in an S&M suit all week and changed into a velour shell suite at the weekend - maybe thats just a little too American for us Brits yet.

Anyway if you dont like seeing it you always get fair warning...you can smell Polo Sport from 3 miles away
