Went out for my paper this morning and this guy was across the street hammering on a telephone pole. There were two at first, but by the time I got back with my camera, the second one had flown the pole... There are three shots.

Not bad for a bird not much bigger than your hand and about 35 feet away.

Not too shabby. For the record, that's a Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). We had one visiting our feeders for a few weeks but it seems to have continued on its migration and left the area. Beautiful birds.

Around here, we call them Flickers and save the nomeclature Red-Headed for the cockaded woodpeckers...none of which have been seen around here for years, but you are probably correct in the official name.

Would be nice to see 2 shots from each extreme focals.

Hahaha! Do you guys call anything by its real name down there in Florida? Didn't you once tell me that basically any lizard that isn't an alligator gets called a chameleon down there too?

Up here (and looking on territory maps, looks like down there) there is also the Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) which I frequently mis-called red-headed until I saw a Red-headed Woodpecker. Once you see the two, you can definitely understand why the Red-Bellied didn't get the red-headed name... though the red-bellied part is often a bit of a stretch with them usually only having a slight tint of orangish-red in their bellies.

Common names are always so much fun!
