buzzybee in my photoalbum. Not often they hang around long enough to snap. I'm having trouble uplaoding from my files & I do have an insect. Lots of good bugs captured well. I'll blame still being on dialup...How does the 'URL upload" fit with my computer files?

Dial-up, wow, that is probably pretty slow with a thread like this.
I only post photos here that are online elsewhere (e.g. Flickr), so I wouldn't know about uploading from your own computer.

Your photo looks good, the fly is nice and sharp. There is perhaps a bit too much going on in the background, which brings me to your aperture of F/18. You can do with a bit less I think.
Most of my macro photos are done at F/11 (I have the same body/lens combination as you have), which gives you a bit more flexibility.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I think I was probably using f/18 to try and get as much of the insect in focus but of course that also impacts the background.

I took a few more shots yesterday at different f-stops and the background is much more pleasing.

    Regards

    Re: Post your insects

I found this small insect while picking some apricots and wondered what they are ?
It seems similar to GEOFF F's Dock Bug ( post #11); is it the same ?
    Grateful to know / Patrik

You are on the right lines, Patrik, but I think you may have a southern Europe species there. I will see if I can find a link to the British Bugs site. There are a lot of confusing similar looking species though.

And here is a beetle which is confusing me.

This is a better shot, but doesn't show the legs properly, and counting the 'toes' is essential for beetle identification.

Are you using the Tinypics upload method; and what size are your images?

Thanks Geoff. The shot of your new unidentified beetle has great details with the first showing the beetle ready for lunch.

    Re: Post your insects

    Geoff,

I asked the Britishbugs.org for identification of the pics sent ( post # 744) and here's what they answered...

    "Hi Patrik,
It is indeed a relative of the Dock Bug, in that it's a coreid. It's clearly a different genus, however, and may possibly be something like Ceraleptus; however, a side view is near-useless for identifying these, I'm afraid, and as it's probably not a UK species, I would probably struggle even with a dorsal view. Tristan specialises in the pentatomids and coreids, however, so he may spot something I missed...
The second 'antenna' is actually the rostrum - its feeding tube. Your bug has indeed lost one of its antennae.
    Cheers, Joe "

    Thanks for helping out.

Yes, Patrik, those bugs are a tricky bunch to identify.

Finally put a name to the beetle in my photos; Dascillus cervinus.

I was looking in the correct book chapter but wrongly counted the toes. I made it four on each leg but it actually had five. If I had got that correct I would have managed to identify it myself.

    Re: Post your insects

If anyone can identify this chrysalis for me, I'd be grateful. I know nothing about insects, but am suddenly eager to learn. I'm in the market for good bug identification resources, if you have any to recommend. (I'm in the Canadian prairie region--central Canada.) C&C on the photo itself is also welcome, btw. Always. Love everyone's contributions. What worlds there are to discover through this medium! I feel like a kid again!

Wow that's cool. Have no idea what it is (sorry)--but the good news is most butterfly/moth books have color plates in them that use the pupae form for identification. You might even google your area with the words butterfly life stages or moth life stages and see what comes up. Let us know what it is.

    Thanks, Mary; will do.

Meanwhile, I have a fly that I would also like to id. I was actually trying to get a shot of these moss sporophytes, when the fly alighted atop the head of one of them. I didn't dare breathe, let alone take the time to reframe or focus, I was so desperate to catch him before he took off. So apologies for the quality, but I hope it is good enough that someone can tell me what this little guy is.

Have you read this thread, Emmett?

HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

    That might help.

I see that your image size is only 150 pixels on the longest size. You really need something around 700 to 1,000 pixels to show up well; depending on the uploading method.

What was your upload size? Or has it been automatically downsized by the upload?

Not sure about that spider, Mary, but the general shape makes me think about one of the Linyphiidae family.

This site may be useful for wildlife information worldwide.

But there should also be some local organisations which you could contact.

These were taken last week. It was late in the morning so the sun is a little harsh. C&C always welcome.
