Some taken at a public garden.

Sorry no story. Just that I had wanted to photograph butterflies for quite a while and happened to be at the gardens the other day.

All taken with a 550D and 70-300L.

I like them, especially number 1 and 3. Number one has beautiful colours and looks very clean (no disturbance). On number 3 I just like that curled up tongue. Always good to see such details.

I've been chasing a lot of butterflies in the backyard lately. I'm not sure what kind this is but I like the way it turned out. I missed a chance at the Black Swallowtail that I've been raising. The caterpillars are gone and yesterday the butterfly showed up briefly while I was out having a coffee. I was not ready for it and I have not seen it since. I have a feeling it won't be back.

Well, I can see why you had to carry the wood home. That is a dangerous looking bug. Love the armour but those pincers (sp) make me wince. Great shots

Bobo, these are all incredible. 1 & 4 are just Beautiful. I think #4 is a Black Swallowtail. It looks very much like the one that I've been raising from a caterpillar and missed yesterday. I like the detailed curly "thing" in #3 but the other butterflies are prettier.

Wendy thanks for the ID. It was also the most difficult to photograph. Quick mover with no set pattern. Took a while walking around in circles trying to locate him.

Great shots Rob, numbers 3 and 4 especially. The fly looks intimidating. What lens are you using for these?

Now that you mention it, I can see the noise on the fly. Still the detail you get is quite good.

Could I ask if you are shooting RAW or jpg?
Also what software you use for PP?

If RAW, a different workflow may help with this; particularly the noise around the blurry bits of fly look to be sharpened noise, if the noise was removed (in PP) before sharpening, a much better result is possible.

I had a similar camera for two years, so I know a bit about dealing with their noise

I couldn't access the meta data on Flickr to see the settings, have they changed that? (or made it visible only for logged in people?)

I generally use GIMP for any PP work, but cannot recall what was I did to this image (taken in MAY 2011).

Any recommends for workflow to help in noise removal with this camera will be gratefully received!
I am currently waiting delivery of a set of macro tubes for my DSLR to see if I can improve macro shots with that (SONY A390 18-70 lens). I have never used tubes before so it will be a case of experimenting to see how best to get in close...
With the SONY I shot in RAW, but these shots were JPG.

Dave, I went to my flickr page as anonymous, selected a picture, and the "Actions" dropdown at the top left of the photo. The exif option is in there.

Quite a few spiders hanging around the front door, and I shot 8 photo's, of which these 2 were the best. I don't have a macro lens, and these were taken with the 18-105mm Nikon kit lens. Used manual focus, as the auto focus was just not quite sharp enough.

I believe that these are very common here in our region: European Cross Spiders

Nice detail for that lens I think. The colour is a bit strange though, did you have artificial light when you shot this?
