    Re: Post your Insects

Hi Geoff, Thanks for posting... Not scary at all! The insect in your first photo (stunning) looks gorgeous! That's an amazingly beautiful photo... Love the colours, the detail, sharp focus on the entire insect, and beauty of the insect, the composition and the background... Would love to see more of these.

I know it is the same insect in the 2nd photo, but he is not so pretty here.

Your macro photography skills are amazing!

OK, Christina, see if this fly will give you nightmares!

Empis tessellata. They feed from flowers but also catch other flies. There were several around yesterday having a more substantial meal.

LOL... I actually like bugs, alot. I find them fascinating as long as they are not on me or in my house. Many are beautiful.

Beautiful capture of a special moment in nature..! The detail, depth of field and sharp focus you achieve in your macros is amazing... I do have a macro lens that I intend to practice using one day but right now I'm hung up on birds...

PS I have a rather large stash of bug photos from Mexico that I have yet to get around to, that may give you nightmares. (the bug itself, not just my focusing skills )

Some unusual bugs for Geoff... It seems I don't have any pics of ugly nightmare bugs, just pretty ones... just the jpegs cropped and sharpened to share this bunch of snapshots which I think Geoff will find interesting..

An old very bad photo of a fabulously prehistoric looking bug... Squash bug

    Post your insects

Some kind of poisonous (but pretty) bug which I placed on top of a plastic bag

A Ciadia... a rain bug that sings (loudly, with a hundred others ) before the rainy season begins

    An unusually pretty grasshopper

    Not sure what it is...

Geoff, a really good shot of the empis......

Christina, an interesting collection of bugs which I've never seen (perhaps because I've never gone south to Mexico). Is the fourth image really a grasshopper?

I took some slug pictures yesterday. They don't qualify for this insect thread but I'm not sure anyone wants to look at a slug thread!

    Hi Bruce,

Yes, their were a lot of interesting bugs there... I'm guessing it was a grasshopper because it kind of looked like one and hopped like one, but I don't know for sure.

I'd love to see your slugs... I'm missing the bugs of Mexico, no interesting bugs to be found in Vancouver to photograph so I'm thinking slugs and worms might be interesting to photograph.

I wonder if anyone is able to identify this caterpillar from Mexico. I sent it in to a couple of butterfly and moth identification sites but have yet to hear back and it has been months.

#4 isn't a grasshopper. If it was in the UK, I would be thinking about one of the Robber Flies (Asilidae family). Rather similar to my Empis family.

I don't know anything about Mexican caterpillars though.

    Some nice clear photos.

    Re: Post your insects

Thanks Geoff... Sure doesn't look like a fly to me, and I don't think flies hop! But I don't know much about bugs either.

I was hoping that you might be able to identify that caterpillar. It was unique and very pretty.

Mixed with some pretty bad ones... But I do like the grasshopper/fly thing! One day I will return for a visit, and I'm hopeful that by then my skills will have improved and I will be able to do these bugs justice.

Okay, I'll start a slug thread once I've done some minor editing on the slug.

Great shot of that feeding fly Geoff. And Christina, that poisonous insect sure has nice colouring. I don't know what that camouflaged insect is but I have seen them around here and there. Not in the Netherlands though, although there is something similar.

    Hi Peter,
I'm guessing but I think the camouflaged insect could be some type of a squash bug... a common garden bug just more exotic looking in tropical climes.

A couple of oddities from today. A Horned Treehopper and a Cranefly (Tipula maxima).

Neither one wanted to be photographed so I was struggling to get suitable angles before they disappeared into the undergrowth.
