The glory of arbutus
There's nothing that says "West Coast/North America" more clearly than the distinctive arbutus tree with its evergreen foliage, twisting trunk, and a reddish bark that sheds every year. In the process of peeling, it creates the most varied patterns and textures....

Mark congrats on a great shot. I don't always get very excited about bird shots but this one is a beauty IMO. It's the lighting I think. The shadow across the bird doesn't bother me, in fact I think it adds to the interest in the shot.
