I was shooting ospreys when this bird popped up within 30 yds of me he swims very far and fast underwater picture was taken on Tn. River.

Thanks Steve and Marie, I see these birds a lot but dont really get good shots .Usually all i can get is far away silhouettes I am pretty sure I spelled that wrong

Hi, James!
I have one semi-decent picture of a cormorant that showed up on Possum Creek (a back water of the Ohio river).
You are so lucky to see them often. This was the first one I had seen in 4 years.

How close you can get to a cormorant depends on the area, food supply and how they are treated by people. Depending on which, they can either be very wary or very tame.
For example, today I was bringing my dinghy alongside the fish quay slipway and had to chase away a cormorant which was perched on the slip edge. It wouldn't move until I was 3 ft away; and it gave me a rather disapproving glare.
And here is another bird. Actually, just after I took this image, it left a little 'message' for the boat owner.

Along the coast near my hometown cormorants are common, every time one goes to the beach (expecially the ones surrounded by cliffs or rocks) meet a cormorant.
usually you can go quite close to them, I mean a few meters,
I've also seen (two times in my life) a cormorant plunging below the sea surface in order to fishing... it is an incredible show!
this bird has an excellent agility and speed under the water. It can stay plunged for more than 20 minutes!
