    Proboscis Monkey

    Hi All,

Here's a shot of a Proboscis Monkey that I took recently, deep in the heart of the Bornean jungle.

Please provide any C&C that you can, especially related to PP.

RAW file processed in Lightroom 3 and then cropped and sharpened in CS5.

    Nikon D90 | Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR | 300mm | ISO 800 | f/5.6 | 1/500 | Handheld

    Proboscis Monkey

    Thanks for viewing

I can't see a lot of room for for further PP work that would in any way enhance the image. I suspect anything else would start to introduce a degree of artificiality.

To my colour-blind eyes, the tonal similarity between the monkey's head and those leaves immediately around it mean that the monkey's head is getting lost a bit. But that's most likely to do with me. You've mad a super job of capturing and processing the detail of the animal's fur (do monkey's have fur or hair?)

Some say fur, some say hair.

Must have been quite an experience- it's a very good shot, you have to take wildlife as it presents itself and he/she is trying to hide behind the foliage I don't see what Donald sees re. tonal difference but it could be subjective. Did you get to see an orangutang ?

Hi Donald, many thanks for your view. I kind of agree with what you are saying about the head getting lost. I have many (hundreds) more shots of these monkeys, I just quite liked the way he was sneakily looking at me! I'll try to get some done where you can see the full face and get to see exactly why these monkeys are so aptly named!

@John, thanks for your comments. We were lucky to get a few sightings of orangutans in the wild. I will post a pic or two soon!

Willie or Jiro is fine by me.

    Re: Proboscis Monkey

Hello, Tommy. For me, I think you did a very good job capturing this scene because it looks natural to me. I mean, the monkey was cautious that's why he is hiding his presence from you. There is enough color separation between the monkey and the leaves and I find it pleasing. Maybe, a little dark vignette would help further concentrate the attention on the monkey's face. If this was my shot, I might add a dodge and burn effect layer to make the shot look more 3-dimensional.

Here is one possible enhancement if you don't mind:

Did you manually dodge and burn that with the brush?

On some images, yes but on this one I used a set of layers to do that for me. I will post the tutorial soon here at CiC so you others can learn it, too Tommy.
