Just got myself a canon G12 compact and am excited trying to get the best of it!

Start with the camera's manual to see what the instrument is capable of. As you start shooting, you will begin to see the limitations, if there are any for your particular purposes, the camera has and begin your search for more knowledge at that point. What type of subjects do you like to photograph? Also, look under the subject of composition while doing your search.
