No, they're not cheap - but then again, neither are camera, lenses, tripods, flashes, or just about anything else associated with photography. I used to fly small planes for a hobby - the light twin was $400 per hour - and I'm sure I spent less on aviation!

Bottom line though, what does it cost NOT to have something like the Vari-ND if that's the kind of photo you want to make? I have 2 of them, and it's the one filter I seriously wouldn't want to be without (plus I'm betting that it's cheaper and more convenient than buying a 1-stop, 2-stop, 4-stop, and 8-Stop).
