Tasmanian Wilderness Railway

I have sensed that there are a few railway buffs in this forum so I thought I would post this thread on the Tasmanian Wilderness Railway.

I had a ride on it in March this year and took these shots. The railway was completed in 1896 between the mining town of Queenstown and the coastal port of Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania.

It winds along the edge of the King River which flows through remote and rugged mountain country.It closed for ore transport in 1963 but was re-built in the 1990's as a tourist attraction.

In the steepest section of the track, it uses a rack and cog system designed by Swiss engineer Dr Roman Apd. You can see the rack in some of the photos below (in the middle of the lines).

Lovely thing to see.

Unfortunately, the sky (in those which it appears) is blown (need to invest in GND filters!). Otherwise, #1, #2and #5 (the bridge) would, I think, have been really good images.

The third one would make a great B & W, I think.

Yes Donald, it's a pity about the blown out sky. I'll see if i can replace the sky in these but I'd prefer to get it right in the first place.

Now that you mention it, I think most of them have B&W potential (I had considered #6 for B&W previously).

That really makes it a different and much better image altogether, in my opinion.

Neat! I've ridden on a cog railway in Switzerland up to the town of Zermatt and in New Hampshire to the top of Mount Washington. Nice images! Thanks for posting!

That's a superb set of of photos.I think many of the oldies Lol.. on here love the old steam engines.I really like the B&W version of the station with 'granny' in the foreground too and the bridge photo. makes an impression... a great all round job.

Thanks John, glad you enjoyed them. Yes I quite like the B&W of the station with granny in too. I think B&W on these photos takes you back to a bygone era when steam was king.

Steve I wouldn't worry too much about the bridge, I'm sure it's made from good strong Aussie hardwood and it appears to be well braced in all directions.

Glad you like that last image - there's nothing like a bit of steam to create atmosphere.
