WEEKLY CHALLENGE - your thoughts on rule change

    Hi Folks,

I'd like your feedback on something. Until now we've been voting on the best IMAGE, however it's occured to me that this may penalise those who really get into the spirit of the competition and enter several good images (because votes for them may be split between several of their good images and they efectively "shoot themselves in the foot").

Just wondering how you'd feel about changing the voting so that either (a) we vote for the PERSON with the best image or series of images (ie the person who you think deserves to win) or (b) I add up the existing votes but award the places to the PERSON (rather than the image) who accumulates the most points.

    What do you think?

That's a difficult one. I can see the merits in Colin's thinking, but wonder if either of the proposed alternatives to the status quo favours those who might have more time to produce a portfolio each week (notwithstanding the fact that they also might be better photographers!). Anyway, my vote has been cast.

For what my opinion is worth i prefer to stick to the best picture.
That's what it is all about on Cic.
I don't mind somebody else shoot him/herself in the foot by placing more then 1 picture.
    It's the risc he/she takes.

Re: WEEKLY CHALLENGE - your thoughts on rule change

Thanks folks - looks like a fairly clear pattern developing here!

I don't think that anyone takes the competition too seriously - it was just a bit of a concern that on one hand we're trying to get as many entries as possible, but on the other, those who do get into the spirit of it (and enter more than 1 image) are actually penalised rather than rewarded.

But the voice of the community has spoken

I can't see any penalisation. I tend to enter more than 1 partly because mid-week there hardly seem any Nikon entries, partly as I know different subjects appeal to different people - apart from occasional images that just work outstandingly well, but then they would still be chosen.

    You could add up all 1, 2 and 3 votes weighted say 5 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd.

    Hi Chris,

Out of interest, I added up the votes for each photographer this week to see how it would have turned out - we would have had Me 1st on 29, you 2nd on 11, and Tareq 3rd on 9 - so wouldn't really have changed anything on this occasion anyway, but probably not a typical week as it's not often I shoot 5 professional landscapes (4 entered) in 1 week (1 day actually!).

I just didn't want people holding back from entering multiple images (thus diluting the entire challenge) because they thought it might hurt their chances - regardless, it's clear that the overwelming majority like it just fine the way it is

Colin, is there any change to also write down the total number of votes?

    Hi Daniel,

Sorry, but I think that something got lost in the translation there somewhere - not quite sure what you're asking?

To change the subject slightly, I feel that it would b better if no comments were allowed before the closing date, whatever is said could always influence it one way or another.

After closure comment away, pick them apart or affirm whatever.

Hi Colin, to write the total amount of votes received, like that we could know what % of the issued votes where for each place.

I think it is a 'friendly' competition, ie no one is seriously bothered who wins, more a fomula for bringing in regular shots from as many people as possible.

With no permanent galleries on site here, images go into limbo quite quickly. I noticed that Colin had already stripped out the comments in passing on last weeks at around the time of the vote. I doubt anyone is going to put any after the count and to my mind half the point of the forum is to gather in a few comments and even keep it jolly with the occasional facetious one.

I only enter as a bit of fun because I am not a serious photographer, I am a Nikon user and it seems we need all the help we can get against the popular Canon users choice of equipment .
I do vote for what I see as the best 3 photo's in my opinion, and it is only an opinion, I am not experienced enough to rip a photo apart technically, and I don't think I would want too.

    Hi Chris,

    That was the idea.

I noticed that Colin had already stripped out the comments in passing on last weeks at around the time of the vote. Not sure if you saw my reply to a previous comment you made on this or not, but any commentary is only removed for a day as voting takes place - just so images entered later in the competition don't get disadvantaged by being rolled onto page 2 where not everyone may realise that their there. All comments are reinstated at the same time I announce the winners.

I still think it would be a better idea to create a poll, so we can vote for the best image.

And because it seems we would vote for the best image, maybe we should enter only one image each week, so as to not disadvatage people that don't shoot more than at least once a month.

    For example:

You get all your entries, then it comes time to vote.

You post a new thread like you usually do, but instead of just posting how to vote, you post a poll with all images/entrants included and you then take the links from the entry photos in the previous thread and repost them inline in the voting thread (makes it easier to orientate voting etc). You may lock the voting thread, but I strongly reccommend not to as sometimes it can make for some interesting conversation. When voting is over you simply close the poll.

Only problem with that Phillip is the polls are limited to a max of 10 choices - and I suspect that I'm going to have to change it to a monthly challenge due to only light interest this time of year, and we could well end up with more than 10 images (some weeks we used to get upwards of 20).

Yeah, agreeably that is a problem. But what you could do is, create two threads with an even amount of images in each and get everyone to vote twice for their favourite image then have a run off between the two iamges that get the most votes in each thread.

An alternative is to create two voting threads and then make it a rule that you can only vote once between both threads then the one with the most votes wins.

Or better yet, people could PM their choices to me and I could just add them up
