Architecture studies

I like the view on architecture as frozen music, like Johann Wolfgang Goethe proposed.
A certain sense of (mathematical) rhythm en movement can often be found in modern architecture, and I like to use long exposures to enhance this.

Here's a first of what hope is going to be a nice series. I'm planning to do so for over a year now.

The building is located in Eindhoven in The Netherlands. Now I've moved to Eindhoven for college it's much easier to do the architecture studies.

What time of day?

I love this shot too. What filter(s) did you use? And what time of day was it?

The shot was taken at noon at a rather sunny day. The biggest challenge was to get the light as well as the clouds right. The sun was lighting the tower from behind me. To get the details and the light right, I needed a clear sky behind me, and some little clouds, combined with blue sky in front of me, for the sky movement. I had to wait over an hour after setting up the camera for this final shot.

I used a polarizer to get the contrast in the sky, and to get control over the reflections in the windows, and a 10 stops ND filter to be able to do the long exposure.

Colin, Somehow I feel I understand black and white photography better when it comes to produce good images. Though I'll give it a try on the colour version :-)

Because of your name, you must be Dutch. I am a Dutchy, who lives in the LA area of California. I know the city of Eindhoven well, the city of Phillips and PSV. I do not know the building. I have lived in Nymegen. As a retired design engineer I like the composition. Still I have one little markup. Looking from an architectural view I think the picture should have been rotated a little more against the clock because the backside wall on the right side should be really vertical.

I'm living in Eindhoven now since I attend a study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology in Eindhoven. I used to live in Limburg until August this year.

Just out of interest, what made you move to LA?

I was a supervising design engineer for an American petro-chemical engineering company in the Hague and in 1980 a large international engineering company in the LA area was advertising in England and Holland. We had at that time about a dozen British job shoppers and I lost 7 of them for LA. I called the LA company and they wanted me also over. I sold my home, left for LA and I am still here.
