Another "Recommend me a camera" post!

So the question, "Wow you take beautiful pictures, what camera do you have?!", possibly from a photographically less talented, less competent person than youself, should not be regarded as frustrating or demeaning your artistry. This curiosity arises from the reasonable notion that a better camera might produce more beautiful photographs for that same person, even if only as a result of the improved technical quality of the images.

Is that question really much different from the following one - is it not just the same question, but from the perspective of someone at a different level in photography? :-

I tend to take a pessimistic side to things. I will look to you to help me develop a fresh, positive, prospective on my artistry!

I suppose that I don't want all my hard work and obsessiveness to go unnoticed. Remember, I'm new to this, you are now my teacher!

I will be ordering my EOS 60D today, I am beyond excited. My first SLR. Have you seen any of my photos? I would appreciate your feedback. Please bare in mind they were taken with a power shot!

Personally, I use the Adobe Photoshop CS5 suite (Bridge / Camera RAW / Photoshop). Have never really found a need to use anything else.

Katelyn - one thing you need to know is that I am also a beginner here. I got my first DSLR only a couple of months ago. It is a wonderful quality of the CiC Website that, not only can we learn lots from the tutorials, and from the really experienced, skilled and knowledgeable photographers such as Colin, but EVERYONES opinions are noted and valued by all the members. I was merely expressing a different view of comments from yourself and others.

As I wrote last post, and will state again here, I believe that the contribution advanced science and technology make to the creation of a wonderful image is given less recognition than it merits by some of the artists among us. No-one should feel guilty about wanting to improve their photography by getting better (or the best available) equipment, provided they can afford it without depriving the family.

It is true that the camera equipment is not itself creative, but its quality and capability play a big part in the production of the photographer's creations, so I sincerely wish you all the best with your new camera. I know how excited you must be and that the waiting time is much more frustrating than is other people asking you the wrong question!! And I will state, at the risk of upsetting the artists again, that you will be amazed at what your new technology will be able to do - with your help, of course!!

Katelyn, for me people are just too difficult to photograph, so I avoid that subject! Otherwise, I have neither the skills nor experience to have developed any favorite subject or style, so I have a go at anything else.

that's unfortunate. Personally, I do not look at this art as requiring prerequisites or as something scientific. I see photography as an expression of the gray area in-between black and white; the area that cannot be explained by science or a set of skills.

If you're starting out I strongly recommend you go for Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. You'll be amazed what you can do with it and, unless you're a pro in need of considerable editing power, will do everything you could wish for.
I don't know how much this goes for in the 'Old Colonies' but here you can pick it up for about 50GBP (about USD 75). For half as much again you can get a DVD tutorial to take you through the whole package or, grab Scott Kelby's magnificent book.

Thanks for the advice Chris. I currently use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3. I learned a lot on my own via trial and error and still have more to learn! I feel fortunate to have this great software.
