I took a random shot this morning & observed this goddamn thing. :(



Nothing on my lens, so it has to be the sensor. Checked my older pics & this has been there for sometime. Well I was taking shot of lasers at the club I had talked about earlier. So I am sure its the laser that has damaged my camera's sensor! :(
Can't explain how I am feeling. Will this be covered under warranty if I don't tell them that I was taking shots of laser? Or is it mentioned anywhere that Lasers are not to be shot with a DSLR?!

Just tonight I saw an article suggesting caution be excised by photographers at rock
concerts, as the lasers will immediately damage the sensor.

I don't know is the answer to that question, Sahil. I suspect that they will try and argue that this is operator error, rather than anything at fault with the camera. All you can do is take it in, ask them to idnetify what is wrong and tell them that the camera is still under warranty.

I don't know how much a sensor is. Are you able to do a web search to find out? Many of the folks on here will, I'm sure, know and will provide an answer.

Hi Sahil,

My condolences too. If it's any consolation, for a while, I thought I might be in the same situation - and figures of around $7000 were being bandied about in the case of my 1Ds3

Warranties are there to protect you against faulty workmanship or materials -- not situations like this (where the manufacturer isn't at fault) - what it MAY be covered under though is insurance (accidental damage).

I bought this for $1200. I think sensor will make at least 30% of the total cost.
And I got it insured yesterday only, & today found this problem. I think I will have to wait for 15 days before I can ask for a claim for Insurance.
And to top it all, I am going for a holiday next month. I was way too excited for it. First time to a sea beach with my DSLR.

Thinking about this some more, I'm guessing that one would be pretty safe just taking stills, as the chances of "wearing" a direct hit from a laser must be pretty small, considering how brief the time period that the sensor is actually exposed to any ambient light (eg 200 shots @ 1/50th is only 2 seconds of open shutter). Video would be the biggest danger.

The client had demanded a video.. & I obliged. Bummer me...
I knew it would damage the eye, so I had switched to live-view mode. Had no clue that it could damage the sensor too... I won't tell them that I had taken a shot of lasers.

Hmmm. Probably we should have this warning as a sticky on the forum.

Were I you, I would have never posted this on the web until after I'd taken it to the service center and played "dumb." You never know who's reading these forums and where they work. Even so, I'd still play dumb and then try to argue the instuction book's lack of caution on this problem. More than likely, they will replace with a stern warning as afterall, they don't want disgruntled owner/users.

While I am still not happy with my service from Nikon and still feel like I have a D7000 lemon, they did at least correspond and work within the sevice parameters they were allowed. Most likely, I will send it back - yet again - as the focus issue still hasn't been resolved satisfactorly nor the EV factoring.
