Changing lenses in the field...

I seldom change lenses since I prefer to shoot with a pair of cameras and I am willing to carry the extra weight of the second body. One of my reasons for not liking to change lenses is possible damage to the lens by dropping it. However I never, even in my wildest imagination, thought about this extent of damage from dropping a lens. It is lucky no one was standing under it...

Did they figure out which plane it fell out of? I will change lens but only over a table or my camera bag. Never from anywhere it can drop more than a few inches at the most.

The irony of it all is that if the lens were put up for sale on Ebay it would probably STILL sell for several hundred dollars!

The "$5000 damage" seemed a bit steep though -- looks to me like it just went through a couple of planks of wood on a veranda. I reckon I could repair that for $4995!

Agreed. If that's what it cost to repair that piddling little hole - I'm in the wrong business.

Actually, ...

... when I clicked on the link afterwards there was a bit more too it (damaged windows frame, antique tiles etc), but even they said $4300. Perhaps they were adding in the cost of the lens

I change mine over my lap if sitting, or just above my open rucksack.

That's pretty impressive, pitty about the Lens though, I could have used that I'm always insanely careful when changing lenses in the field, if possible I even try get someone I trust to help me, just to be safe, I can't afford to break any of my lenses.

The homeowner should be able to find out who dropped the lens; just ask around the local photo clubs and stores for a photographer with fresh bruises on their forehead from smacking their forehead repeatedly on the wall.

You need to remember that this happened in the magical land of California where every gal is a beach babe and everyone believes everyone else has bundles of money laying about.

The photographer, pilot, plane owner, and anyone else involved would face a law suit in the millions if they ever figured who they are.
