Output sharpening for enlargements

Hi All,

I have read and now apply capture sharpening and then a second sharpening after some adjustment and am happy with my results. What I would like to know and can't seem to fine anywhere here on cic is how much sharpening (what ratios) would I apply if I am enlarging an image to say (36in X 18in). I am processing an image to put on canvas and would like to know what is the best way to do the sharpening for such a large print.

Hi Debbie,

I do a lot of printing onto 22 x 44" canvas - and the short answer is "just don't worry about output sharpening", for 2 reasons ...

1. The canvas testure will obscure any sharpening that you do anyway, and

2. Because of the size of the print, people will view it from a distance that won't allow them to resolve the output sharpening anyway.

I would agree with Colin. I have printed a number of 20x30 images on metal with no additional sharpening for printing, infact, I don't do any addtional sharpening on what ever substrate I use. So far, everyone has been happy. Knock on metal.
