Pseudo-HDR Puzzle Place

Why might this pseudo-HDR image be called a true "tone-mapped" photo? Devonians should know.




The image, irrespective of its HDR processing, illustrates something I've not often come across. The original, without any sharpening or local contrast enhancement, shows a messy mass of undifferentiated branches and twigs. When sharpened and contrast enhanced as here, the image is too busy. Any ideas for improvement?

I'm in the far south of Devon, as far as you can get!

Think this is just one of those impossible subjects. The only suggestion I can make is to quitely back away and look for a single tree, then start again.

I had that fuzzy feeling with this image. I think in my case it has a lot to do with my bundled lens and chromatic aberration (I think that is what this effect is called). I am not sure there is too much that can be done apart from maybe shooting in the golden hours and getting some decent glass.

If you do a bit of slide sliding in the Unsharp and High-pass there sometimes seems to be an optimum point for twiggery to be clear. Some PP software has anti-vignetting control; said with little confidence as to efficacy on this type.

No idea on HDR & can't identify regional puzzle.

With high-frequency images like that sharpening is darn tricky - you really have to pick a size and resolution and optimise just for that (more so than with other images where you might get away with it).

I've had images like this too - you see something whilst you're there, but it just doesn't translate into anything worthwhile once you look at the photograph ...

Thanks Guys - I think Colin has summed it up. I thought that there was something worthwhile, but it is just too messy back in the lab. If time permits, I may go back and have another go along thelines of other suggestions. Geoff - I apologise to Devonians. It should have been Somerset. The river is the Tone which runs through Taunton. (Tone-Town). Hence the "tone-mapping".
