A used Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm F2.8G Lens... Need your advise!
Hello everyone! My name is Ariel, I'm newbie here and photography is just my hobby. So, I'm buying this used lens for my Nikon D7000. I need your help on what to check/inspect/test aside from looking at the physical condition of the body for scratches, dust, etc.
The guy is selling it for $795. I will offer him $700 and see if he's gonna bite it.
This is my first time to buy a used lens. So, as mentioned above I really have no idea about testing the lens. Please help me with this, Thanks!
Ariel

Hi Ariel
Great lens for a Nikon DX camera, a good choice.
Check the mount at the back for signs of wear, obviously check the glass both back and front with a loupe or magnifying device as your naked eye will not usually pick up imperfections.
Why is he selling it?
What does he think of it?
Is he upgrading? If so what to?
How long has he had it?
Has he kept it with a filter on the front or not?
Rotate the barrel, is it smooth?
It shouldnt be too slack, but clearly it shouldnt grind either.
If anything newer ones will be slightly stiffer, but not stiff to rotate.
Just a few pointers....
Does it rattle or when you rotate it, are there any noises?

Also, put it on your camera and fire off a few shots and examine these at 100% on the computer including ones of a neutral background or grey card so you can see imperfections.
If you can get hold of a calibration chart and can set it up properly this might also help, although that might be going too far?
