    Main street

    Mini Competition #595

The main street in Wijk bij Duurstede (in the morning, otherwise their should be more traffic).
I've asked if they want to remove the banners, but they didn't .
Watch the church tower on the right. It has a flat roof.
Wijk bij Duurstede was a very prosperous village in the 17th century. The archbishop was there seated (now-a-days he is seated in Utrecht). He wanted to build here the highest church tower of The Netherlands, even higher dan the famous Dom at Utrecht (which is the highest now). But because of the decay of Wijk bij Duurstede and the lack of money, they never completed the church tower. A strange, much to short, church tower is the result.

Well done to all the participants in the competition.

Well done Alex, with this great shot.

Do you climb this kind of things?
It's pretty dangerous isn't it, because these cliffs tends to crumble so now and than.

I used to climb lots of things like this but they were not chalk. I don't think you are allowed to climb the chalk cliffs in Sussex since they are protected. I wouldn't want to anyway since they would be all crumbly and unlikely to have good features to climb (i.e. things to hold onto). I know that it is possible to climb chalk with ice climbing gear. However that would damage the rock and is very bad form.

In this case I just sat near the edge at the top and admired the view.
