Colin, have you seen the Rob Galbraith article on the 1D X? There are a few minor points not mentioned in the highlights reel.

14 fps is not only JPEG-only, but also with the mirror locked up. And once the iso goes above 32,000, you're down to 10 fps.

Max. sync speed is down to the 1Ds's: 1/250s. [full frame sensor => longer shutter curtain travel]

The camera can use an electronic 1st curtain to reduce vibration.

Richard: Thom Hogan is actually positing Canon and Nikon will be head-to-heading not leapfrogging, as the D4's arrival is near, and he's hearing 18MP. Everybody's racing to get a pro sports model out in time for the Olympics.

    Hi Kathy,

I traded in my 1D3 for a 1Ds3 a few years ago, anything in the 10-14fps category will still be at least twice as fast as what I have now; mind you, with landscape, I shoot closer to 4 frames per hour! (and studio/location portraiture is only about 1 frame every 2 to 3 seconds (giving the lighting time to recycle), so no big deal there for me).

Sync speed is also what I'm used to, but it doesn't matter anyway as I can shoot up to 1/8000th in HSS mode (location), and only ever shoot 1/125th in the studio.

The electronic first curtain is what Canon already do with the 5D2.

Will be interesting to hear what Rob Galbraith has to say about the autofocus (I remember the 1D3 "saga" well - I agreed with some of what he had to say, but not all of it).

All in all, I don't do a lot of sports shooting (at the moment), so it's more issues like AF point placement and increased dynamic range that interest me the most (ok, ok, you caught me -- that wasn't "the whole truth" -- I admit it, it's also a shiny new toy and I want one!).

I have just read that despite the new auto-focus system with an improved AI servo tracking algorithm it is not clear whether the camera will auto-focus at f8. I can't find any information on this. Not that it matters to me for my hypothetical purchasing decisions but it might alienate a lot of bird shooters who have lost their 1.3x crop factor and now possibly cannot use teleconverters on their 500mm lenses. This could lay the ground for a new high speed crop camera with better auto-focus.

However I can't actually think that Canon would take out the one feature from the Pro series bodies that makes the autofocus worth all that money for distance shooters. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Canon line-up evolves over the next year.

Ah. Then all this is old hat to you, and the 1D X must seem like the perfect blend of all the features you want in one package.

OOo! This I did not know.

Yes, that was a helluva lot of fun reading at the time. Given that I will never own a 1 series, though, I had no opinion on the matter. It'll be interesting to see what his conclusions on the new AF system will be.

Also, I am wondering what this may betoken on the 5D/7D lines (since they do seem like lower-tier shadows of the 1Ds/1D). And what the hell the November Hollywood announcement is going to be (one assumes something with far more enhanced pro video capability, particularly in terms of file sizes and formats).

All in all, I don't do a lot of sports shooting (at the moment), so it's more issues like AF point placement and increased dynamic range that interest me the most (ok, ok, you caught me -- that wasn't "the whole truth" -- I admit it, it's also a shiny new toy and I want one!).
We've all felt that. Happy new toy!

    Hi Alex,

I wondered about this too - in one part they referred to F5.6, but in another, they referred to the AF being MORE sensitive than the current one - so who knows. My gut feeling is that nothing will be a backward step, but as to what type of AF sensors work with what combinations will take a bit of re-reading to get to stick in my brain!

The following article tells a bit more ...
