Whether to have this photo Vertical or Horizontal.

This is mainly based on opinion but should I have this photo Vertical or Horizontal. Also any other tips or things I could do to make it better with smoke photography.

Whether to have this photo Vertical or Horizontal.

Hi Tyler, if you decide to go horizontal and have the room to do it, consider putting the red end in the lower left corner and the blue end in the upper right corner. You might be able to get away with that kind of tweaking to see how it looks as you can add more black background if necessary. At least it provides another option to straight horizontal or vertical, eh?

So I did what you said but I don't know how to put the red end in the right corner. Do you mean having the smoke vertical instead of diagonal? Redoing the whole setup or how I have just did it.....

IMO the vertical arrangement is better. However, I think there's too much disturbance in the smoke trail.
Take from this what you will because there's no right or wrong way to photograph smoke, but I like to keep it simple by making sure there are no draughts to distrupt the smoke trail other than the natural updraught from the source. Get in tight and try using your flash from below on low power (about 25% is good).
One of the nice things about smoke is that you can go crazy wild in PS with colour, contrast etc. and it's all good. (see my avatar)

    Hi Tyler,

Frank said "putting the red end in the lower left corner" - i.e. diagonally, by re-cropping with rotation.

    I'd agree with that suggestion.

I didn't have the surrounding pixels, so it ended up being a crop down

But it demonstrates the orientation I think Frank had in mind.

    Cheers,

Hi Tyler and Dave, I thought that the smoke being more on a diagonal would add additional interest. I like it, what do you think - after all Tyler, it's your baby.

Now that is an interesting side-effect I hadn't realized would occur until I saw the change. The white part of the smoke is now vertical!

It is, I didn't notice that. I increased the reds saturation. I'm just playing with it to make it better.
