When viewed in the lightbox, both these images become very powerful.
I'd wonder, Frank, if the first one could take more of a crop at the bottom? Is this a 2:1 ratio? What about 3:1? That would put the glacier wall on the bottom third line more than on the centre.
Powerful indeed!
Nice images of this glacier...
Until I visited Alaska, I had no conception of the imensity of glaciers. It is difficult to believe that something this big is actually moving (albiet at a very slow pace).
Occasionally, it is nice to include a human or a boat in the frame to have a point of reference as to how big these things actually are.
The other thing that amazes me is the green-blue color of glacially fed rivers...
Yes Donald, it is a 2:1 crop and could got to 3:1 as it has a strong panoramic essence. I stopped where I did mainly because I liked the detail in the foreground water.
Here it is as a 3:1 crop.
For those interested, the shooting data is ISO 64, 1/320 sec, f4, focal length 7mm. I wish we could have gotten the entire ice wall in the image!

I'd love to have been able to get something in the image for a size comparison but in the Glacier Bay National Park you need a NP Ranger on board to even get this close and we were probably 1 1/2 miles away. Some of those ice columns are 40 feet or more wide and 150 feet tall. When one lets go it sounds like an explosion then it hits the water and sets up quite a wave. Some of the iceburg pieces that break off could easily sink a smaller ship.
