Hello from Brisbane, hoping I can learn how to get the best from my camera and start taking really nice shots. I have been dabbling for years and have only just started paying attention!
Hello from Brisbane, hoping I can learn how to get the best from my camera and start taking really nice shots. I have been dabbling for years and have only just started paying attention!
Now, PAY ATTENTION.
Hello Anne and welcome to CiC. I'm glad you've found the forum.
As you can read on the masthead, CiC is all about being a learning community. So, for anyone determined to learn how to get the best from their equipment and how to develop the skills to create high quality images, the help and support is here, both in the tutorials and also via the people who take part in this forum.
So, I hope you enjoy being part of it. And remember - The person who never asked the question never found out the answer.
Hello Donald and thank you for the welcome. I might just be asking too many questions as I am heading your way in a few short weeks and as I have never photographed snow I might be asking for a few tips! I am Scottish but moved to the heat 20 years ago
Anne
Most of what I've done with snow in it can be seen here. Where are you from? Where are you coming to?
But it's the quality not the quantity that counts.
And, if you speak to someone from Edinburgh and tell them you're going to Glasgow, or vice-versa, then, for a lot of people, you're talking about two different worlds.
At least I didn't ask what school she went to (which for a west of Scotland sectarian-minded people, is the most important question you can ask). It establishes whether you're Protestant or Catholic. And in some sectors of Scotland, that matters.
Hello Donald
I am returning to Kirkintilloch :-) I will also take a day trip to visit family in Balquhidder, weather permitting, so hope to get some lovely photos. I am really tempted to buy a wide angle lens as the widest I have is 18mm .... I just need someone to tell me that I actually "need" it. Will find the right place on the forum for all my questions.
Hello Colin
I had a short stint of 9 weeks in Invercargill .... now that was interesting (stepped right back in time) and well before I was in to photography. I seem to recall rain, rain and more rain, quite like Scotland actually !!
Anne
Hi Anne, welcome to CiC from a fellow Brisbanite. I've been here a wee bit longer than you, all my life in fact but my late mother was born in Glasgow. So I'm one of the MacLean clan!
We've been saying that for years about the Kiwis But we must now give them some respect as they are the world Rugby champions.
Cheers Dave
Hello Dave, whereabouts in Brisbane are you? I am over in the Western Suburbs :-) Do know which part of Glasgow your mum was from?
Anne
Western suburbs also Ann. My mother was born in an inner part of Glasgow (the name escapes me for now) but it was near the shipyards. My grandfather was a fitter and turner who worked in the shipyards but emigrated here with his family when my mother was quite young. I believe he grew sick of all the industrial strife in the shipyards at the time (and the corresponding lack of income).
Dave
Sounds like it could be Govan, or Partick maybe.
Anne - Re the 'Do I need something wider than 18mm?' question.
Unless you see a specialist role for an ultra wide-angle, I would have thought that 18mm was plenty wide enough. I have the Tokina 11-16mm, but it doesn't live on the camera all the time. I do much more with my kit 17-85 and the longer lenses.
So, yes, an ultra wide angle has a role and opens up options. But unless it's a route you particularly want to go, then maybe hold off a while. I don't think you'd absolutely need it for this trip.
Give yourself a couple of hours on either side of your visit up to Balquhidder. That's taking you into gorgeous countryside (Rob Roy McGregor country, for all Liam Neeson fans).
