American Bald Eagles winter here in the Midwest, along the rivers where open water permit abundant hunting for fish. This capture was taken at Lock & Dam 14, on the Mississippi River near Davenport, Iowa. The open water downstream of the big dam, nearby bluffs and trees attract many eagles in January and February. These regal raptors roost, soar and fish within a few hundred yards of a long viewing walkway, often crowded with photographers with long lenses. This was taken, hand-held with a Canon 1Ds 3, EF 400mm f/5.6, ISO 800 at 1/2000th second at f/9, in manual mode.
