I don't know how much help I'll be to you. I don't have the Canon wide angle but I do have the Tamron 17 to 50. It's just an f/2.8 but takes wonderful pictures. It is really versital when I'm doing outside portraits as well as in the studio. I alo have a Tamron 28 to 300 which I love and I've used it so much that I need to have the contacts worked over a little. It's 1:3.5-6.3 Macro. Its so wonderful on vacations as its about the only lens one needs to carry. I have other Canon lens and like them. However the 28-300 is probably my favorite even though it's not Canon. I shot with a Canon 7D and a Rebel XT

I was thinking about this too, but then I thought why not just get an efs 17-55 f2.8?

Sorry I went a little haywire with my sums.
I average about 50,000 to 55,000 frames a year... that would make a total of about 85,000 since March 2010... Etc.
Sorry - it was a mental arithmetic error - but I don't know how I did it. I thought that 225,000 was a big number and I have only worn out one mirror box assembly since 2010.

Lame joke of the week submission:”
    Q. Why did they paint a set of Canon Lenses black, for that shot?
    A. Because Nikon was already out of the tournament.

We wanna see a truck load of photos from that 35/L next week!

    Gidday Fran, welcome to CiC,
The Tamron 17 to 50 will mount on a 5DMkII but will vignette (dark edges and corners) as the lens is designed to work on an APS- Camera, which has a smaller sensor, than the 5DMkII.

On the matter of the EF-S 17 to 55F/2.8 IS USM and the EF50F/1.4 – I agree with Brian:

If you do not require the F/1.4 ~F2.5 aperture range and if you using an APS-C camera then the zoom lens is a much better choice and for many reasons, not the least of which is the IS.

My previous comments to Jon's remarks were about the reason for waiting to buy the 50/1.4, after already choosing that is was desirable, to have it.

It's a fair point: mostly because photography is more of a hobby than a "passion" and the 50 f1.4 is one of the more unreliable lenses made by Canon (it's all relative of course), but I'd like a lens that won't threaten to break on me if I don't baby it.

Also, I don't really have a few extra hundred to drop on a new lens right now.

The idea of a relatively fast, wide angle zoom is something I hadn't thought of before. It's interesting because I enjoy landscapes, but I was looking at the 50 f1/4 for it's low light performance.
