Hi , Does anyone know anything about variable neutral density filters? How do they compare with stackable filters?

There are a couple of people on here who use a Vari ND, most notably Colin Southern, one of the Admins.
I think the main point of a Vari ND versus stacking other NDs is not only one of convenience, but versatility. You've only got one unit to think about and you're invariable getting as filter of the highest quality.

Hi Pete,
As Donald mentioned, I use the Singh-Ray Vari-ND a LOT - great piece of kit.
Often as photographers we'll have the need to control both our apertures (for DoF control) and shutterspeed (for control over things like water movement) - so with the Vari-ND you can simply dial in the aperture you want and then vari the filter attenuation to get the desired shutterspeed. Works very very well in practice.
