In Town

The rainy season has started and with it the sun has vanished. The day after our Thanksgiving I went for coffee rather early and found the sun trying to break through as it rose. It is amazing that places such as this can still be found in town, infact accross the street from an Elementary school. Have a look in the lightbox for best effect.

Thanks Rob, I liked the lighting on the summer dryed grass.
My kids live on Liberty lake, I also lived in Spokane as a child. Some nice images to be had round there.

Beautiful image Paul, and you caught the morning light just right. That row of trees
along the left side have just enough orange leaves left to add some nice color.

Nice looking wetland area, too...ever seen any wild critters around there? Mink and 'Coons
should be running around that place pretty regular, especially when frogs and ducks
are around.

Hey Mike, thanks. There is some wildlife once in a while. This particular spot only has water in it after a serious rain. It sits along a creek and is always mucky but it takes a lot of water to fill it.

I think this image provides an excellent learning tool.

If you look at the colour version and then the B & W - Are you seeing the same things, or do different features of the image stand out?

I think it's a classic instruction in deciding whether your making an image for the colour that can be presented, or whether you make an image to explore line, shape, tone and texture.

Both, I think work. But they work in completely different ways.

Thanks Donald and I agree. My first intention was not the B&W but color, which I do like better as I took it for the light. In the B&W the dead trees are more the focus. While I do like the B&W I feel the color is a stronger image.

Thats funny... I came from the Seattle area, Stanwood, (North of Everett). I need to make my way back over there, I would be headed for the Olympic Peninsula.

You might want to make a trip to "Hurricane Ridge" its protected so the wild life was friendly. Also the Eagles should be out on hwy 20 marblemount pass soon..

Wish I was over there right now. Lots of forest to photograph.

Rob,Hurricane is a good spot, I need to get up there again. The Eagles seem to be running a little late this year but they are up 20 now I believe. Dizzy would know, he lives right there. I live just south from your stomping grounds in the Brier/Bothell area.

As for the Peninsula, yes I have started marking a map for destinations. I ride a motorcycle and am planning a summer trip along the coast for a week. Can't wait.

Cool, my dad went to Brier Elementary, he grew up in MountLake Terrace, my whole family is over there in the Seattle area.


As for the Eagles, I could use at the least a 400mm before I go back up there.

Both are good. I just like the color one a little more.

I like the B&W... I would even experiment with bumping up the contrast even more. Maybe pulling down a Graduated filter over the sky might be interesting - to balance out the darkness at the bottom (maybe on the same angle as the darkness in the water) Anyway just a thought.

Thanks Reynold, I like the edit. I will see if I can find a graduated filter in Gimp. I think I stumbled accross one a couple days ago but have not found it again.
